Overview
Facing south on a small peninsula just a few miles from the fascinating town of Siracusa, Al Plemmirio is a delightful sea-front villa surrounded by verdant, bougainvillea-shaded lawns and theatrically curtained, hammock-strewn terraces. Al fresco living is the order of the day, a concept reinforced by the presence of a delightful pool and, just a few carefree paces away, a calming sea lagoon. If you should ever tire of doing very little, Al Plemmirio is within easy driving distance of a host of wonderful towns, sandy beaches and archaeological sites.
Al Plemmirio featured as one of Conde Nast Traveller's "best beach villas in the world" in the February 2010 issue >>
The Property
Inside: one enters the house via a large, shaded terrace. On the ground floor is a living and dining area and a well-equipped kitchen. A small flight of stairs takes you up to a double bedroom with en suite bathroom and lovely sea views. Another few stairs take you down to a double and a twin bedroom sharing a bathroom. The kitchen opens onto a small covered courtyard at the end of which is a small dependence with bedroom and bathroom.
Outside: on entering the gates of the villa, one is drawn into a lovely mature garden with lawns, Mediterranean trees and bright, colourful bougainvillea. Terraces overlook the sea, jostling for guests’ attentions with the spacious, fully-furnished external living and dining areas, where you will probably spend the vast majority of your time. Comfort is assured by the almost decadent number of hammocks and sun loungers. The pool, overlooking the sea, has splendid views, while a gate at the end of the garden provides direct access to the sea beyond.
The Area
Following the defeat of the Athenians in 413 BC Syracuse was arguably the most important city in the Mediterranean (and hence perhaps the world). Remains of that period are beautifully preserved in Ortygia, at Neapolis and in the fabulous archeological museum, all of which are within a few kilometres drive of Al Plemmirio. Syracuse is not just an Ancient Greek museum however. The old baroque island city of Ortygia offers a marvelous choice of restaurants, bars and shops in beautiful piazzas and on the sea front. Also within easy distance of Al Plemmirio are white sandy beaches, towns such as Noto, Modica and Ragusa, Mount Etna, and much more.
