Overview
Balu is a beautiful, spacious 18th century Sicilian "frantoio" (olive-oil press) surrounded by olive groves, lawns, citrus trees and a fabulous pool. Tastefully decorated and with plenty of voluminous living space inside and out, this villa is an ideal base for a family party. The imposing building and its calming grounds offer the space, tranquillity and atmosphere for a relaxing holiday in the country. However, as Balu' is situated just a few miles from the spectacular Greek site of Selinunte set on its golden sand beach, there’s no need to miss out on the culture either.
The Property
Inside: on the ground floor activity revolves around the huge press room which has 6 metre (20ft) high ceilings and features some of the original oil pressing equipment. The dining/lounging areas are comfortably furnished with sofas, terracotta floors, open fireplace and a large dining table. There is also a spacious kitchen and, up a small ramp, a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. A small studio leads to a double bedroom with bathroom and then into a second studio (with independent access via a door leading onto the pool side) and a triple bedroom up a flight of stairs - this is under a sloping roof and so maybe a little uncomfortable for tall people. It is, however, perfect for children and has its own en-suite bathroom with shower. Going upstairs, past another bathroom, one arrives at a gallery overlooking the press room. This leads to three comfortable double bedrooms (one with en-suite bathroom) and a shared bathroom.
Outside: a long private driveway leads to the main entrance and cars can be parked out of sight. The main outside living area includes a covered barbeque and shaded dining table, a large lawn and stunning pool all surrounded by lush vegetation. The garden is centuries old with palms, cacti, olive and citrus trees and many Mediterranean flowering shrubs. Pre-prandial strolls can be had around the estate where there is also a small pine-tree copse.
The Area
In the south western part of Sicily, often referred to as African Sicily, both for the climate and the proximity to the Tunisian coast. This part of the country boasts some of the most extensive olive and grape production in Sicily, so the local oil and wine are not to be missed!
Nearby attractions include the fantastic Greek town of Selinunte, with some of the best preserved temples anywhere, as well as Marsala (made famous by the wine first produced by the Englishman John Woodhouse) and Mazara del Vallo, a charming fishing town.
Also within very easy reach are Segesta, Palermo, Erice, Trapani, The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and a host of other places of cultural interest.
