Rural bliss in the heart of Sicily.

Casa de Arena is a beautifully refurbished 18th century country house situated in the rolling hills and wheat fields that were once known as Rome’s breadbasket. Life here in the true heart of Sicily follows the gentle, sweet rhythm of the seasons and Casa de Arena is an ideal environment for those looking for peace and quiet, breathtaking views and somewhere to unwind after a hard year’s work.

“We loved every second. It was the perfect antidote to a hot and hectic week in Rome. Once we got to the villa, we didn't want to leave. The owners greeted us warmly and the caretaker was fantastic. The villa is filled with charm and personality and the grounds are stunning and studded with surprises. Every day we watched the progress of a herd of goats across the hills and listened to the sound of their jangling bells. We will never forget our stay at Casa de Arena. Thank you so much.” Salvatore Dellaria, USA, August 2010

About the Property

Inside: The interiors of Casa de Arena have been lovingly restored, maintaining the original structure but bringing the fabric of the building into line with modern requirements. Entrance is into a study cum hallway and along a corridor, of which all the other rooms open up. On the right is the dining and living area, complete with a fireplace decorated with antique ceramic tiles from Caltagirone and a terrace with splendid views of the entire valley. The original alcove is furnished with a sofa and armchair and flanked on either side by two doors that lead to small single bedrooms. To the left of the entrance hall is the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom with bath, another double bedroom, a bathroom with shower and, finally, the fully-equipped kitchen and pantry. Furniture and furnishings have been chosen with great care and attention to detail.

Outside:The focal point of the outside areas is the lovely, panoramic pool, surrounded by a terracotta-tiled patio. A shaded poolside dining area the surveys the surrounding countryside, taking in the hills and the fields right the way across the hills to Mount Etna. Think About

A superb property from which to experience the "real" Sicily.... and of course to take in the views whilst relaxing by the pool!

The Area

Exploring the local Area

The villa is set in the rural heartlands of Sicily. In fact, the area around Morgantina was once known as the "granary of Rome". The rolling hills and forests of this area inspire images of the hunting depicted so vividly in the superb mosaics of the world famous Villa Romana del Casale (UNESCO Heritage Site) a short distance away. Casa de Arena is well situated for exploring the centre of Sicily, while a good selection of sandy beaches on the south coast are just over an hour's drive away.

Nearby Enna, the provincial capital, has an interesting old town centre, a history dating back thousands of years and stunning views. Piazza Armerina has a beautiful "medieval" quarter with an impressive duomo. About 40 minutes' drive away is lovely Caltagirone, another historic hill-top town, famous for its mosaics and well worth a visit.

"Thank you for a really good holiday! Really impressed with the whole package. Have used many companies but this was the best. Friendly, informative and felt like a very personal service... We enjoyed the mix of beautiful ruins, fabulous Barogue architecture, incredible food and really warm, friendly people. We stay in Italy twice a year but this was first visit to Sicily. Really bowled over. It feels very different to other parts of Italy."

"We loved every second. It was the perfect antidote to a hot and hectic week in Rome. Once we got to the villa, we didn't want to leave. The owners greeted us warmly and even led us into town on the evening we arrived. The caretaker was fantastic, so helpful and kind and he brought us fresh figs every morning. The villa is filled with charm and personality and the grounds are stunning and studded with surprises. Every day we watched the progress of a herd of goats across the hills and listened to the sound of their jangling bells. We will never forget our stay at Casa de Arena. Thank you so much."
