Overview
Set in fifty hectares of olive groves above the seaside town of Torrenova, Il Ferrarolo has for years been the manor house of a large estate owned by a local aristocratic family. A very attractive, charming home with views of the sea and the Aeolian Islands, the main structure dates from the 18th century, but parts of the building are easily recognisable as fortifications from a much earlier age. In fact, the estate was farmed by Byzantine monks even before the arrival of the Normans in Sicily, and there are the remains of a Byzantine chapel not far from the house. A fabulous pool with stunning sea views completes the picture!
The Property
Inside: the house is set on two floors. On the ground floor, the large entrance hall gives onto the sitting room with terrace, dining room, a large kitchen and a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom. Depending on the position of the sun, you may dine inside, in the garden on either side of the house or on the terrace with sea views. Upstairs there is one double bedroom, one twin, three single bedrooms (one of which has an ensuite bathroom), one study with a double sofa-bed and two bathrooms (one with shower, one with tub).
Outside:Il Ferrarolo is at the end of a long private drive through the estate. The upper floor opens onto a large furnished terrace on one side and onto the upper part of the garden on the other. The highest level of this part of the garden is home to a magnificent pool area with views looking out to the Aeolian Islands. The ground floor opens to the garden on two sides. The gardens are well tended and furnished whereas the estate itself is over 50 hectares, and offers some very pleasant walks. There are beautiful views of the sea, countryside and Aeolian Islands from all around the house.
The Area
The estate itself is over 50 hectares, and is very pleasant to walk in. Close by are some beautiful and very unspoiled towns of the Nebrodi mountains, including San Marco D'Annunzio, San Salvatore di Fitalia, Frazzano' and Alcara li Fusi. There are some wonderful walking routes in the Nebrodi mountains, in which the fauna, flora and views are spectacular.
The town of Torrenova has some good local cafes and trattorie, and the beach is quite reasonable. Just 13km up the coast at Capo d'Orlando the beaches are even better and one can catch the hydrofoil over to the the Aeolian Islands for day trips. Just past Capo d'Orlando is Tindari, with it's beautiful sandy beach and famous tongues of sand and it's dramatically situated Greek theatre.
The motorway takes you to Messina in about 40mins and on to Taormina in a further 35mins.

Think About
This is a working olive estate and a caretaker lives on the estate in an adjacent house. A cook is available to prepare meals (the local cuisine is superb) or to give general cookery or special bread-making lessons (the house has a traditional bread-making oven). A motorway runs in a cutting about 300m from the house, and is audible but not loud (it never disturbed us or any clients since 2004).
