Overview
A suite in a fascinating 12th-century palazzo in the old centre of Palermo, where the sole heir of Staufen Emperor Friedrich II lives with his family. Palazzo Federico is one of the oldest and historically most important buildings in Palermo and was originally built on the Punic/Roman city walls. The tower on the south of the palace is one of the few remaining parts of the original 12th century Norman wall. Count Federico's family has lived in this palace for centuries and history lovers - the ideal guests - will enjoy the unique atmosphere that makes a stay here such a memorable experience.
The Property
Accommodation: the suite that will be your sleeping quarters has been kept exactly as it would have been in the 17th century (with the fortunate addition of a well appointed bathroom). The canopied bed is slightly raised and there are brocade curtains, antique furniture, carpets and paintings. It is not a large room, but is comfortable and totally unique.
Shared areas: you will be the sole guests and the Count and Countess, who, though not always in residence, will make you feel perfectly at home, giving you the run of the house and encouraging you to "live" it as it should be lived. Breakfast is served each morning in one of the reception rooms.
The Area
The Palazzo is located in the ancient centre of Palermo, within walking distance from the main cultural and historical sites, such as the Cathedral, the Palazzo Reale, the many astounding baroque churches, the Massimo Theatre, the Botanical Gardens, the lively markets. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars within walking distance.
If you prefer not to rent a car (private parking is available) or take taxis, you can take advantage of the efficient bus service to Mondello, with its splendid beach and the elegant liberty style villas or to Monreale with its stunning Norman cathedral.
Regular bus services leave from the main train station for Cefalu', Bagheria, Trapani and other destinations all over Sicily.

Think About
Palazzo Federico is not a hotel. Its distinct charms arise from its historical uniqueness and we therefore recommend it to those in search of an experience, not of luxury. Though it is just a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral, the neighbourhood of Palazzo Federico, the Ballaro’, is in need of restoration and has many dark narrow streets. It’s all the more fascinating for that, now that you are expecting it. Two simple double rooms with a shared bathroom are available for guests with children.
