A perfectly positioned property with superb sunset views over the village of Pollara, the sea and the Aeolian Islands.

Pollara is set in a 200 thousand-year-old extinct volcanic crater, half of which has long ago been washed into the sea. The nearby hamlet and bay below, from which our villa takes its name, were made famous by Michael Radford in his Oscar-winning film Il Postino. The villa, a series of restored farmhouses divided into two self-sufficient apartments sharing enormous terraces and gardens, offers one of the most stunning views we have ever seen… and we’ve seen some!

About the Property

Inside: Pollara has two separate, fully equipped apartments with two bedrooms each, and a further two bedrooms with independent access from the terraces. On the ground floor, the first apartment has two double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large kitchen, dining and living area. The master bedroom has a double bed with drapes, and ensuite bathroom and superb sea views. The second double bedroom has views to the rear of the house and a bathroom a couple of metres away in the hall. The kitchen and dining area have glased doors leading to the wide, shady, Aeolian terraces with their superb sea views. Also on the ground floor and with separate access from the ground floor apartment are two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. These bedrooms are linked, and also have independent access from their terraces. Upstairs is another apartment with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen and dining room leading onto the upstairs terrace. The master bedroom has a double bed, whereas the smaller has two single beds and beautiful sea views. They share a bathroom. The kitchen is smaller than that in the downstairs apartment, but is very functional.

Outside: the house is surrounded by sweeping, furnished terraces. There are both shaded terraces for eating, reading and admiring the views, and open, roof terraces for taking the sun, or an evening aperitif. The extensive grounds give a sense of space that is not often achievable in Aeolian homes. Also in the garden is a shaded barbeque area. A path from the garden takes you down towards the coast, and the sea is about a 20 minute walk away.

Think About

Pollara is an incredible Aeolian house, and a huge rarity in that it is hard to find large houses in the islands.

The Area

Exploring the local Area

The hamlet of Pollara is set just above the famous beach that featured in the Oscar winning film "Il Postino". Much of the beach is currently under water, however, there is superb swimming and snorkelling from the boat slides that lead from the original fishing boat sheds hewn into the volcanic rock. There's a great restaurant just a minute's walk from the gate of the villa, and a small bar just behind it, so if you don't feel like shopping or cooking you're in the right place!

Salina is the greenest and the most fertile of the Aeolian Islands (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), famous for its capers and the sweet Malvasia wine.

Salina is neither as developed for tourists as Vulcano or Lipari nor as fashionable (expensive) as Panarea, but boasts some excellent restaurants, cafés and shops. A reliable bus service connects the main villages, making it easy to explore the most beautiful sites on the island. Cars and mopeds are also available for rent.

Things "not to be missed" on Salina include the charming towns of Santa Marina (10 mins), Malfa (5 minutes) and Rinella (15 minutes), the beach of Pollara (15 minutes), made famous by the film “Il Postino”. All of these are easily accessible by car or bus. For the more energetic, the walks to Mount Fossa delle Felci and Mount Porri are stunning.

Salina’s central position in the archipelago makes it the perfect base for easy day trips to the other islands. The 6 main islands in the Aeolian group are easily accessible using the regular hydrofoil services.
