Overview
Set in a large estate of citrus groves between Monte Tauro (Taormina) and Etna, Villa Pietraperciata is one of the finest historic houses in this area of Sicily. The main house dates from the 18th century and oozes old-world charm with its terraces, views and sculptured facades. A fabulous opportunity for those looking for exclusive and authentic accommodation in this much sought-after area. Taormina has long been Sicily's most popular destination and the view of a smoking and snow-capped Mount Etna from the Greek/Roman theatre is certainly its best known image. There is also a good selection of sandy beaches down the hill on the nearby coast.
The Property
Inside:the main house is set on two floors. The main entrance is on the upper floor: passing through the hall, to the right is the kitchen and the living, reception and dining rooms, all furnished with antiques. From the living room, one accesses a large panoramic terrace with views of Mount Etna and the sea. To the left of the hall is a double bedroom and two bathrooms. A staircase leads down to the lower floor, which is home to 1 twin and 1 double (accessed via the twin) to the left and 1 double and 1 twin (accessed via the double) to the right. All the downstairs bedrooms, however, may be accessed independently by their French windows. Running behind the bedrooms is a corridor with a bathroom at each end.
Outside: the gardens are beautifully landscaped in traditional Italian style and contain many historic artifacts. The large pool is set in an elevated position, giving it a great view of the house and the landscape beyond. The gardens and terraces have several areas which remain cool and shaded throughout the day, and during the summer both lunch and dinner can be taken outdoors in these spectacular surroundings.
The Area
Due to its spectacular position and historical legacy, Taormina has long been Sicily's most popular destination and the view of a smoking and snow-capped Mount Etna from the Greek/Roman theatre is certainly its best known image. There is also a good selection of sandy beaches down the hill on the nearby coast. The town is well supplied with good restaurants, bars and a range of shops and boutiques.
Villa Pietraperciata is well placed for visiting the north eastern coast of Sicily, doing spectacular hikes on Mount Etna and visiting the hill towns of Etna, the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountain ranges. Further afield one can easily reach Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Noto and even Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland.
