Overview
An 18th century manor house set in the rolling hills of the Ragusano countryside, just outside Modica, Villa San Filippo offers history and authenticity coupled with many modern comforts and a delightful pool. This property has been a labour of love for its charming owners, who have painstakingly restored it over several years, before deciding to open it to a discerning clientele. It is crammed with family artefacts and will appeal to anyone looking for a real sense of Sicilian history. Its proximity to the stunning baroque centres of Modica, Ragusa, Scicli and Noto also make it an excellent base for a cultural exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage area.
The Property
Inside:
up a dozen steps from where you leave your car the original “piano nobile” (noble floor) is, as the name suggests, all on one level. Inside the front door is a large reception and dining room and a kitchen leading directly to a very charming outdoor dining area. The main living room is charmingly furnished and features a balcony with views of the countryside and out to sea. The two double bedrooms and one twin share two bathrooms. For larger groups there are two other apartments about 40-50m from the house. These have double beds, bathrooms and simple kitchens.
Outside: the main garden of the house is directly accessed from the “piano nobile” and is gracefully designed on several different levels stretching from the previously mentioned dining area, past a fountain, a wrought iron gazebo and hammocks stretched between the mature chestnut trees to the pool, which has far reaching views over the surrounding countryside. Beside the pool is a changing room with bathroom and shower and an outside kitchen.
The Area
Villa San Filippo is ideally situated both for trips to the sea (10 minutes’ drive from the closest sandy beach) and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful towns: the UNESCO-protected Baroque towns of Modica, Scicli, Ragusa and Noto. Siracusa is also within easy driving distance as are the quiet beaches of the Nature Reserve at Vendicari.
Slightly further afield is Catania, Taormina and Mount Etna.

Villa San Filippo is the main house on a small estate. It is completely private, has separate access and the described grounds and pool are for the exclusive use of thinkSicily guests and not overlooked. Other buildings on the estate are owned by members of the same family and may be occupied during our clients stay.
