Overview
An 18th century country house with sweeping views across vineyards and olive groves that take in the medieval hill-top town of Erice, the port and salt pans of Trapani, and stretch out to sea to the Egadi Islands, the suggestive scene of the ferocious sea-battles of the Punic War of 241BC. Villa Verderame mixes style and comfort with lots of period character, and is ideally positioned for exploring one of the most fascinating areas of Sicily.
The Property
Inside: the ground floor hosts living and dining areas, the kitchen, a study and a bathroom. It is bright and airy throughout and features several floor-length windows leading to the terraces and the pool, and some original art collections by notable local artists of the 20th century. The kitchen is superbly equipped with high quality equipment and utensils for the most demanding chefs. On the first floor are a double and a double/twin with en-suite bathrooms, a double/twin, a single with en-suite bathroom and a shower room. Passing through a sitting area with a panoramic balcony and up a flight of stairs is a loft-style single room with low ceilings and a roof terrace. The sleeping areas have a high quality air-conditioning system.
Outside: the house is set at the top of sloping olive groves and boasts magnificent views. It has a beautiful, mature garden with an 18th century stone quarry, a lovely outdoor dining area in the shade of huge trees and its own olive grove of about 100 trees (you can even make your own olive oil in the picking season). The pool is situated to the side of the house and has several shaded areas and views of the sea and Erice.
The Area
Villa Verderame is wonderfully situated for an exploration of Western Sicily. The nearby towns of Trapani, Erice and Marsala all boast beautifully restored centres with fascinating histories and some great restaurants. The Phoenician island of Mozia is just a few km away, as are the beautiful salt pans where migrating flamingoes stop off during their voyages. The beaches south of Marsala and at San Vito lo Capo are some of the finest in Sicily, and the beautiful Egadi Islands will take to another dimension of laid back relaxation. If all that weren't enough, the dramatic Greek sites of Segesta and Selinunte are very close by too.
