Overview
Casa Carcicera is a modern, spacious, airy villa with a great pool and superb views in the Noto valley region of Sicily. It is set in a huge estate of hills studded with olive groves which roll gently down towards the superb beaches of the Vendicari Nature Reserve. It is a practical house too, boasting high quality fittings and appliances throughout, and offering four en-suite double rooms. A highlight is certainly the pool whose16 metres make it wonderful for a workout at any time of day.
The Property
Inside: from the front door, one enters the communal part of the house whose layout is perfect for a convivial holiday party and voluminous enough to hold the living, dining and kitchen areas without ever feeling crowded. The living area has comfortable sofas, two fireplaces and an entertainment area with large flat screen TV. In the centre of the house is the dining table, and beyond that the superbly equipped and wonderfully social kitchen leading out to a dining terrace, the garden and the pool. The four double bedrooms all have en-suite bathrooms and two of them have a bathtub in the room itself. There is also a study, with a desk and a sofa bed. Furnishings and decor are contemporary and stylish throughout.
Outside: the house is reached via a long unpaved road through the olive groves, and gives a sense of sublime privacy and tranquillity. It is on the top of one of several low hills that gently undulate down towards the Vendicari Nature Reserve. The pool is set in a large area outside the kitchen door and offers views across the hills to the shimmering sea.
The Area
Casa Carcicera is set in rolling hills between the fascinating baroque town of Noto and the beautiful natural reserve of Vendicari. Noto is the most easterly of a chain of baroque towns now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also perhaps the most perfect of the baroque towns, which were all rebuilt in flamboyant style following a major earthquake in 1693. The Vendicari nature reserve boasts some of the finest sandy beaches in Sicily, which are pleasingly under populated even in the height of summer. Vendicari is also home to thousands of migrating flamingos, and sea turtles nest on its beaches.
If hiking in the hills is your thing, then there is some spectacular scenery in the rushing streams and waterfalls of Cassibile and at the Paleolithic burial sites in the dramatic valley of Pantalica.
Siracusa is just half an hour's drive away, and a day there is highly recommended to anybody spending a week or two at Casa Carcicera. A little further afield, the other baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli are easily reachable in a day.

Casa Carcicera is a top house with a beautiful pool in a sought-after area of Sicily. There are a few drop-offs with low walls around the property, so parents with young children should pay attention.
