Archaeological sites in Sicily

Selinunte

On the south-west coast of Sicily lies one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Mediterranean: Selinunte. On a par with pretty much anything found in Greece, it is a must-see!

Taormina

Taormina's main attraction is the wonderfully positioned Greek theatre overlooking Mount Etna. When the Romans came, classical plays made way for more bloodthirsty entertainment!

Tindari

Roman habitations and baths, colourful floor mosaics and ingenious radiator heating systems and a well-preserved, superbly panoramic Greek theatre... welcome to Tindari!

Solunto

High above the fishing town of Porticello, precariously perched on the edge of a sea-front mountain, sits Solunto, or Kfra, as the Phoenicians named it when they settled there in 700BC...

Mothya

2,700 years ago, the Carthaginians identified the tiny lagoon island of Mothya as the ideal spot to build a trading outpost. It soon became one of their most important and flourishing towns...

Segesta

Attentive passengers driving along the motorway to Trapani will, at one point, start to wonder if they're hallucinating. "I’m not sure but I think I just saw a Greek Temple over there..."

Syracuse

The archaeological site of Syracuse is home to a fascinating series of classical remains, including one of the largest Greek theatres ever built, still used for an annual festival of Greek plays...

The Valley of the Temples

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular and evocative archaeological sites and is not to be missed.

Villa Romana del Casale

The Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina is another of Sicily's many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, home to some of the most extensive and intricate examples of Roman mosaic art.

The Cave di Cusa

Planning on seeing Selinunte while in Sicily? An excellent idea! But make sure you also see the nearby quarries of the Cave di Cuse too: then you will understand Selinunte much better!

Pantalica

If you're staying in the Siracusa area and fancy a good walk with a difference, head up to the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica in the Iblei Mountains, yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site...
