One of the most desirable properties in south-east Sicily!

A superbly finished farmhouse renovation with enchanting outdoor living areas, uber-stylish interiors and a glorious location, Le Corti di Cannamara is a real gem! The building dates back to the late 19th century, but its original inhabitants did not have the luxury of an infinity pool between their house and the sea views. Neither did they have a Hammam, a home cinema, or the kind of kitchen that a professional chef would look forward to cooking in!

“Le Corti di Cannamara exceeded my expectations in almost every regard but in particular: the quality of the grounds and the helpfulness of the owner and staff... The house is a seamless blend of old and new. The original buildings have been painstakingly and thoughtfully integrated with one another and especially with the garden. The result is an understated compound that exudes eclectic contemporary charm... The garden is heavenly...” Sara Marino, Canada, June 2011

About the Property

Inside: the indoor living areas of Le Corti di Cannamara are made up of one large L-shaped farm house and two smaller depandances a few metres away. All buildings have gloriously high beamed ceilings. The living area is to one side of the L, while the other side houses five bedrooms. The living area features a sitting room, a superb kitchen with easy access to the courtyard and the herb garden to the rear, a cinema room with projector, DVD and Sky TV, a reading room, and a glazed and shaded gallery with some great floor cushions. Another touch of luxury is provided by the Hammam and its adjacent relaxation room.
The sleeping area houses five of the seven bedrooms as follows: the master bedroom with full height ceilings and ensuite bathroom, two double bedrooms on mezzanines with private sitting rooms and shared bathroom, one double room and one twin room on mezzanine level with shared bathroom. A few metres from the main house, the first depandance has a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, whilst the second depandance has a living area and a bathroom on the ground floor, and a double bed on a mezzanine.

Outside: the outside living areas at Le Corti di Cannamara are extremely well designed and proportioned, and work very well for large or small parties. They also communicate very well with the inside living areas that surround them. Entering the courtyard, the eye is immediately taken by the four splendid palm trees that dominate the courtyard. To the left you see the main house, to the right a rich garden of mature plants and lawn, and straight ahead the shaded loggia complete with outside kitchen, and the pool. The loggia hosts a large dining table and a large, shady outdoor sitting area looking out to the pool, the lawns and the views of rolling hills of olive groves that take the eye right out to sea. The pool is fabulous, with an infinity edge and a long enough straight to get a good swim in. Next to the pool is a changing room with shower. Beside the pool is a large lawn that's great for playing with kids or just relaxing with a good book in the shade of an olive tree.

Think About

Le Corti di Cannamara is a perfect eco-friendly property with its solar panels system and biomass boilers using readily-available olive husks. A great house for making the most of this fascinating area of Sicily. The upstairs bedrooms on mezzanines are lit and ventilated by skylight type roof fitted windows, and have quite low ceilings. Something to Think About if you're bringing a basketball team on holiday with you!

The Area

Exploring the local Area

Le Corti di Cannamara is ideally situated both for trips to the sea (10 minutes’ drive away in Sampieri, though there are many other beaches along the coast within easy driving distance) and to some of Sicily’s most beautiful towns: the UNESCO-protected Baroque pearls of Scicli, Modica, Ragusa and Noto. Siracusa is also within easy driving distance as are the quiet beaches of the Nature Reserve at Vendicari.
Slightly further afield is Catania, Taormina and Mount Etna.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Marina di Ragusa have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.

"Very good and likely to return to Sicily. If and when we do I would unhesitatingly use The Thinking Traveller again... (you achieved) a level of service I have not experienced with any other European based travel company."

Sara Marino and Sean Aylward, Canada, 11 June 2011
"Le Corti di Cannamara exceeded my expectations in almost every regard but in particular: the quality of the grounds and the helpfulness of Giovanni and Sebastiano.

The house is a seamless blend of old and new. The original buildings have been painstakingly and thoughtfully integrated with one another and especially with the garden. The result is an understated compound that exudes eclectic contemporary charm.

The garden, if you like gardens, is heavenly. From the long stretch of driveway lined in blooming lavender; to the herb garden; the cactus garden; the rose garden; the creeping jasmine; the bright and delicate pansies at the base of an architectural tree; to the surrounding pasture resplendent with a cacophony of wild and colorful flowers. The gently rolling sodded areas, with the pasture behind and further afield the sea, made playing frisbee or soccer or tag with my three children, both a tactile and aesthetic experience.

The garden is not, and likely can not, be represented accurately by the photos nor do my words do it justice.

Next -- Sebastiano (Mirella and Andrea) - I was pleasantly surprised by the property managing family's helpfulness and competence. And the food they prepared was some of the best that I had in Sicily.

I have never rented a villa before (and I have rented many) where I was able to meet the owner. What a colossal treat that was.

"Just wanted to drop you a line to say what a wonderful time we had in Sicily, and thanks so much for organising the gorgeous villa. It has such a lovely, peaceful setting up in the hills every morning we had our coffee watching little birds flit around the bougainvillea by the pool, then spent afternoons pottering about various baroque towns and beautiful beaches (and eating way too much almond granita!)." - 13 October 2010
