| The Mysteries of Easter and Spring |
|
Sicily takes Easter very seriously. All over the island, in large towns and tiny villages alike, processions weave their way through narrow streets, central thoroughfares and piazzas until finally they arrive at the local parish church or Cathedral.
Probably the most renowned of these religious manifestations of devotion are the "Mysteries" of Trapani on Good Friday, in which the townsmen carry statues through the streets. Each statue represents one of the stations of the cross and are made by the various local guilds. Thousands of Sicilians line the streets awaiting the arrival of the Virgin Mary "in search" of her son. Read on >>

 Sicily may not be an obvious choice when it comes to a destination for a golfing holiday, but the island already boasts two challenging and enjoyable 18 hole courses and, with a number of other developments planned, that may be about to change. In the meantime, both courses – Il Picciolo and Le Madonie - offer an opportunity to play golf in wonderful locations and a great climate without the crowds, slow play and high green fees that are typical of many of the more established golfing destinations elsewhere in the Mediterranean.  For many Sicilians January and February in Sicily mean fava beans, artichokes and peas, the delicious vegetables of the season that dominate greengrocers' shops and market stalls. Such is the popularity of these three essential Spring ingredients that someone, sometime in the distant past had the marvellous idea of cooking them all together.  Sicily is now well and truly "on the map". While several years ago complicated travel arrangements may have put some people off visiting Sicily, nowadays the wealth of connections with European and even American cities is making the largest island in the Med an extremely accessible destination. Palermo airport has been busy promoting low-cost flight companies and since the arrival of Ryanair many other have followed. Catania's Fontana Rossa airport has daily BA flights from Gatwick and there are a great number of new flights from cities all over Europe.
