Opera in Sicily

Sicily boasts two fabulous opera houses: the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo (this latter being the third largest in Europe). Opera seasons run from November to June and the 2006-2007 seasons include Genoveva (Schumann), Tosca, La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci in Palermo, and Don Giovanni, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Shostakovitch), Norma and Sleeping Beauty in Catania.

Recipe of the month: Aubergine "Caponata"

If, during your travels in Sicily, you happen upon one of those unassuming trattorias that has no menu, but just an endless stream of dishes that fill your table until the waiter takes away the space-wasting bottle of water, you will almost certainly be brought a plate of caponata, a veritable classic of Sicilian cooking of Arabic origins. Taormina Arte

As with Siracusa's Ancient Greek theatre festival, Taormina also puts its Graeco-Roman amphitheatre to good use, with Taormina Arte . The programme of this festival, however, is rather different and features everything from classical concerts, jazz nights, ballets and modern dance performances, opera, plays, readings and a  four day WOMAD festival. It runs from the start of July until the end of August so if you're going to around the Taormina area over the summer, why not combine a visit to the amphitheatre with a cultural night out? Twenty artists in search of Lampedusa's Sicily

Lampedusa's classic novel, "The Leopard", has been a source of inspiration for many working in the arts and recently, in 2005, it provided the the basis for an acclaimed exhibition of seventy paintings at the Francis Kyle Gallery in London. Now these paintings, which feature a breathtaking range of techniques and styles, have been gathered together in a new book, "Lair of the Leopard", published by Third Millennium.

The best of both worlds........

Property of the month: La Corte

If you read March's newsletter, you will be aware of Cefalu's considerable charm, with its Norman Cathedral, its narrow Mediaeval streets, its beach and its vast range of excellent restaurants. It's a great place to visit and a great place to stay, especially if you take lodgings at La Corte

La Corte is hidden away behind the Cathedral in a labyrinth of streets that remain unexplored by other visitors to Cefalu. With peace and quiet guaranteed, a comfy hammock to lounge in and a shaded terrace dining area for marathon meals, you will have plenty of time to relax and think of more active pursuits, such as popping into town for an ice-cream or a swim. And remember: absolutely NO car is needed - just slip your shoes on and you'll be there in five minutes.

Truly the best of both worlds......
