Sicily - one big UNESCO Heritage Site

Wherever you go in Sicily, you will never be far from a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

From Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica, to the Baroque towns of the Val di Noto (Noto - whose magnificent cathedral is pictured left -, Ragusa, Modica, et al), from the Villa Romana del Casale to the Archaeological Area of Agrigento and on to the Aeolian Islands, the list just goes on!

Several other sites, including Palermo and Monreale Cathedral, Mothia Island and Lilibeo and Taormina and Isola Bella have also been nominated!

Why not come and see them some time?

And the winner is...

The winner of the 12th International Couscous Fest at San Vito Lo Capo this year was a local team, Giuseppe Favaloro, Vincenzo Caradonna and Enrico Bricarello.

Their winning dish, a fish couscous with wild fennel and medallions of forkbeard (a fish apparently!), fought off strong competition from the other entries prepared by chefs from the Ivory Coast, France, Morocco, Palestine, Senegal, Tunisia and Israel.

If you're ever in west Sicily, don't miss the fish couscous!

Memories of Sicily - if you've got some, share them!

"Sweet, sweet, the memories you gave-a me, You can't beat, the memories you gave-a me..", sang Dean Martin!

All the thinkSicily team spend several weeks a year touring Sicily, visiting our villas and getting to know fantastic places around the island. Here are some of their best memories of Sicily - some of them, inevitably, about food - like the photo of Andrea here!

Why not share some of yours on our Facebook page?

Recipe of the month: calamari ripieni!

Taking a pre-dinner stroll once on Levanzo (left), one of the Egadi Islands, I noticed the locals gathered round the jetty, fishing rods in hand. Soon they began to reel in dozens of squid which landed, one after another, with a plop and a splutter of ink on the quay. One of the men was the chef in my hotel and it was evident the menu was being decided there and then! Indeed, about 1 hour later the kitchen doors opened and out came a plate of stuffed calamari Sicilian style!

Getting inside Sicily...

Sicily... what do you think of when you hear that name? Hot summer sun and sandy beaches maybe, or Mount Etna, or perhaps just sitting in the shade of a sea-front cafe... Many people still perceive Sicily as a "coastal resort" and tend not to venture too far from the sea. In the opinion of The Thinking Traveller, those people are missing out on so much. Sicily's interior is full of historic villages, castles, dramatic landscapes and an unspoilt genuineness that will make you yearn for a simpler way of life...

Leave the turkey at home this year...

...Christmas and New Year in Sicily

As the days get shorter and Autumn slips into gear, thoughts turn towards the winter calendar, and no events are quite as important as Christmas and New Year.

Sicily is a great destination for those wishing to spend a Christmas or New Year with a difference. Whether you stay in one of the island's larger cities or near one of its tiny villages, the atmosphere will be one of conviviality, tradition and bonhomie.

You may well even be able to spend the big day on the beach - the photo on the left was taken in Mondello on 25th December 2008!
