Recipe time! "Pasta c'anciova e muddica atturrata"

If you can make out any of these Sicilian words, it is probably "anciova" which is, phonetically-speaking, remarkably similar to our very own anchovy. And that is also the principal ingredient. The last two words translate as toasted breadcrumbs, which was a poor man's substitute for grated cheese. All in all a truly traditional recipe whose other, richer ingredients, such as raisins and pine kernels, were added by chefs cooking for the Baroque nobility.  Go to recipe page >>

Fishing, carnivals and spas - it must be Sciacca!

Fishing, carnivals and spas may seem like a strange mix of characteristics, but these are the things that really sum up the town of Sciacca (pronounced Shaka) on the south coast of Sicily, a little up the coast from Agrigento.
